Frequently Asked Questions

An OT is an allied health professional who provides client-centred supports to restore, adapt or compensate function to increase everyday performance.
Restoration interventions seek to regain a lost capacity. For example, therapy to restore fine motor function reduced by a stroke.
Adaptation interventions seek to reduce the difficulty of a task to make it easier to perform. For example, a grabrail in a shower or a stool in the kitchen can allow us to perform tasks in these areas with less concern for balance or fatigue.
Compensation interventions seek to change the way a task is completed. For example, using a wheelchair instead of walking or an emergency pendant instead of a mobile phone.
These approaches commonly overlap, and the same intervention may be classed differently depending on the person or goal. It is the role of the OT to assist clients to achieve functional and meaningful solutions.
-
As every person and disability is unique, OTs provide a wide range of supports. These include:
Mobility supports, including modifying your home.
Behavioural and emotional regulation strategies.
Skill building for independent living, like cooking or financial management.
Fatigue or pain management.
Strategies to support schooling or working.
OTs will also ask you about your strengths, priorities, and goals. We are not just seeking ‘a solution’, but ‘your solution’, the one that provides you the greatest sense of independence and accomplishment.

As a mobile service, Alacrity OT is unable to provide comprehensive speciality OT services for early childhood (per the NDIS, children younger than age 9) such as a sensory clinic or group-based therapy. I would generally recommend engaging a specialist early childhood OT service.
